This session explores how ambitious women in higher education can navigate career pauses, part-time work, and alternative work arrangements while balancing caregiving responsibilities. Through real-world case studies, participants will gain insights into the challenges and opportunities of career transitions and learn practical strategies for maintaining professional growth.

Attendees will explore approaches to structuring flexible career paths, positioning career gaps as opportunities for skill development, and communicating effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and hiring committees. Leaders will learn specific approaches to create supportive institutional cultures that retain talented women through career transitions, including best practices for flexible work arrangements, returnship programs, and leadership development pathways. The session will include interactive discussions and shared experiences to equip participants with actionable strategies for managing career transitions with confidence.

Katie Donnelly

Katie Gauthier Donnelly is a professional in higher education, a mom, a partner, a daughter, a sister, an educator, and a community member. Like many of you, Katie wears a lot of hats. In 2018, Katie paused her career for caregiving and since then, she has developed a portfolio career that feels meaningful and purposeful, but this has taken significant trial and error. Katie earned a Master's degree in International Development from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and African Studies from St. Lawrence University. Today, she is a social science lecturer for the Community College System of New Hampshire. She has a special interest in global education and workforce development.
